#AI Limits in #CARDIOLOGY

Clinical decision-making of man in partnership with machine will continue to be key, as we seek to help each of our patients heal and maintain or even increase our joy in medicine

The limitations of artificial intelligence in cardiology

Artificial intelligence (#AI) seems to be all the rage these days, as it should be, given its potential to revolutionize medicine in many ways. #AI is actually already an integral part of many of our lives on Google, Amazon, Facebook, and other sites. Siri and Alexa use #AI too, so we can’t easily escape it. Why would we want to?
Of course, one concern about the algorithms is that they often are trained on ethnically homogenous datasets, potentially limiting their generalizability to the general population in the United States, and to others around the world. It is quite common for innovations in personalized medicine to be trained and validated in Caucasian populations, with the typical exclusion of minorities.

Balance Your #Life Through #Creative Writing

Creativity is an aspect of self-care that often goes unexplored. You may have been recommended to keep a mood diary, or write down your problems as a form of therapy, but there is a way to use creative writing as a self-care tool that goes beyond the idea of journalling...

4 Ways to Use Creative Writing for Self-care

Having a crafty hobby is a fun way to pass the time, but research suggests that creativity can have a tangible impact on our mental wellbeing. In 2017, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Arts, Health and Wellbeing reported that the “act of creation, and our appreciation of it, provides an individual experience that can have positive effects on our physical and mental health, and wellbeing”.
Supporting this, a study has found that 79% of people in deprived communities in London ate more healthily after participating in group art projects, while 77% engaged in more physical activity. Overall, 82% enjoyed greater wellbeing, proving that an enriched creative life can contribute to a more positive mindset.

15 Logical Fallacies You Should Know Before Getting Into a Debate

What is a Logical Fallacy?

A logical fallacy is an error in reasoning common enough to warrant a fancy name. Knowing how to spot and identify fallacies is a priceless skill. It can save you time, money, and personal dignity. There are two major categories of logical fallacies, which in turn break down into a wide range of types of fallacies, each with their own unique ways of trying to trick you into agreement.
A Formal Fallacy is a breakdown in how you say something. The ideas are somehow sequenced incorrectly. Their form is wrong, rendering the argument as noise and nonsense.
An Informal Fallacy denotes an error in what you are saying, that is, the content of your argument. The ideas might be arranged correctly, but something you said isn’t quite right. The content is wrong or off-kilter.

For the purposes of this article, when we say logical fallacies, we refer to informal fallacies. Following is a list of the 15 types of logical fallacies you are most likely to encounter in discussion and debate.

#KLSF: #Read Books; Read More Books - And Then, Read ...

"You're not doing yourself any favors if you're in the 26 percent of American adults who haven't read even part of a book within the past year."

Why Reading Books Should Be Your Priority, According to Science

By Christina DesMarais

More than a quarter--26 percent--of American adults admit to not having read even part of a book within the past year. That's according to statistics coming out of the Pew Research Center. If you're part of this group, know that science supports the idea that reading is good for you on several levels.

Reading fiction can help you be more open-minded and creative

According to research conducted at the University of Toronto, study participants who read short-story fiction experienced far less need for "cognitive closure" compared with counterparts who read nonfiction essays. Essentially, they tested as more open-minded, compared with the readers of essays. "Although nonfiction reading allows students to learn the subject matter, it may not always help them in thinking about it," the authors write. "A physician may have an encyclopedic knowledge of his or her subject, but this may not prevent the physician from seizing and freezing on a diagnosis, when additional symptoms point to a different malady."

People who read books live longer

That's according to Yale researchers who studied 3,635 people older than 50 and found that those who read books for 30 minutes daily lived an average of 23 months longer than nonreaders or magazine readers. Apparently, the practice of reading books creates cognitive engagement that improves lots of things, including vocabulary, thinking skills, and concentration. It also can affect empathy, social perception, and emotional intelligence, the sum of which helps people stay on the planet longer.

#BrainCare: Training Your Brain May Mitigate #Dementia

"We are fortunate to live the longest lives ever since the beginning of mankind - but higher life expectancy also implies an increase in age-related diseases. Dementia, in particular, has become a widespread disease, and scientists all over the world are researching methods for combatting it."

Recent study confirms: Brain training can reduce the risk for dementia by 48%

But finally we have some good news. Although there is still no medication that can cure dementia, which has also been called “the 21st century plague” due to its rapid increase through the world population, leading neuroscientists have found ways to reduce the risk and keep the brain fit in older age.

Incredible results

A few weeks ago, scientists presented some revolutionary insights from their “ACTIVE” study at the International Alzheimer's Association Conference in Toronto. The study, which is one of the largest in the field of cognitive decline, took 10 years and involved 3.000 participants.
The results of the study are clear:
Risk for dementia can be significantly decreased by regular brain training.

#IDEAS; Science of Critical #Thinking

"Even thinking of a new way to consider or frame an old problem–to consider what others may have missed–is a wonderful critical thinking approach to learning."

8 Science-Based Strategies For Critical Thinking

1. Challenge all assumptions
And that means all assumptions.
As a teacher, I’ve done my best to nurture the students’ explorative questions by modeling the objective scientific mindset. Regardless of our goals in the teaching and learning process, I never want to squelch the curiosity of students. One way I accomplish this is by almost always refraining from giving them my personal opinion when they’ve asked, encouraging them instead to tackle the research in order to develop their own ideas.
Students are not used to this approach and might rather be told what to think. But wouldn’t that be a disservice to their development, knowing we need analytical minds to create progress? And knowing how fast technology converts science fiction into fact? Concepts that were pure imagination when I grew up, like time travel, have now been simulated with photons in Australia. Could this happen if we never challenged our assumptions?

Question everything. In that regards, questions are more important than answers.

Inspirations of passions

Make your interests gradually wider and more impersonal, until bit by bit the walls of the ego recede, and your life becomes increasingly merged in the universal life. An individual human existence should be like a river — small at first, narrowly contained within its banks, and rushing passionately past rocks and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider, the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being.
